Struggle for the Middle Sea Vincent O'Hara 9781844861026 Books Reviews

If you were to read most World War II Histories the Mediterranean was a series of British Victories Taranto to Cape Matapan, Both Victories early in the War. Yet , Somehow the Italians kept fighting and supplying North Africa right up to the fall of Tunisia. This account written by a respected American Naval Historian sets the record straight. While not excusing Italian failures or downplaying British successes, he gives a much more balanced history, showing the Italian Navy as brave and professional , hamstrung by technology, fuel shortages and lack of air coordination, yet putting up a credible and at times successful resistance to powerful British fleets. Too often have military Historians simply accepted Wartime propaganda as fact [this is still seen in the abscence of balance in American histories regarding the Eastern front]. Matapan 1941 [early 1941] and Taranto 1940 while both proud victories but in no way were they decisive. The Med had more surface battles than any other Theatre even the Pacific. Well written and a welcome addition to World War II history.
Vincent P. O’Hara’s “Struggle for the Middle Sea The Great Navies at War in the Mediterranean Theater, 1940-1945” is the third volume of a series documenting surface actions in World War II, and extends his outstanding work to the Mediterranean. The book is good for general readers, historians and more particularly naval wargamers.
.
Besides providing excellent documentation of battles, the author takes a clear-eyed look at the Italian Regia Marina unburdened by accumulated myth and the book is valuable for this reason alone. O’Hara also delves into the previously little-documented role of the Kriegsmarine in Mediterranean surface actions, and documents two little-known actions off the south of France involving U.S. ships. The German and U.S. actions were also previously documented in the two prior volumes of the series. A few actions in the Red Sea and off the Levant are also documented.
.
Once again the format of battle information changes slightly. Instead of being a separate section, or a suppressed set of caption notes, the information on time, weather, visibility and sea state is incorporated into the header of each order of battle table. This is not an improvement. Also, information on surprise and mission for each battle is no longer provided. As with previous volumes, area maps accompany each chapter to show the general location of the actions, but not every battle receives a track chart.
.
The concluding chapter enfolds the statistical information previously provided in appendices in the previous volumes.
.
I highly recommend this book for all readers, whether general or historians. Again this volume is particularly useful to naval wargamers developing scenarios. It should be read in conjunction with “The German Navy at War” and “The U.S. Navy Against the Axis.”

This review is a repost as does not appear to be properly cross-connecting this product.
Full of data but entirely lacking in historical narrative. Like reading a telephone book.
